There's a trend in online business: real products and memberships for under $10 a month. Here are four worth a look, including the ones I pay for.

What can you get for under $10 right now? Not much, unless you’re buying from an online business.

There’s a trend I keep noticing. Real products and even memberships, priced under $10 a month. Not stripped-back samples designed to upsell you either. Actual useful things.

Here are four I’ve bought, and what each one is good for.

The four

The Renegade Notebook: if you’ve been around me for any length of time you know I rave about this one. It’s one of the few subscriptions I pay for every month without thinking about whether to cancel it.

Thoughtful Bonuses: I bought this when I was trying to work out what bonuses to put with an offer, and it earned its money in an afternoon. If you’ve ever added a bonus just because everyone else does, this is the one.

The Soulful Growth Club Membership: I’m a big fan of Ruth Poundwhite and I’ve bought a lot of her work. I’m in her bigger membership, The Soulful Sales Society. The Growth Club comes included with it. The journal prompts are the part I actually use.

Show ‘Em Everything: a quick training from Elizabeth Goddard on building your own everything page. She has a stack of other $9 trainings too, and they’re all the same shape: one specific thing, done in a sitting.

Why the cheap ones are often the useful ones

I think it’s the size.

A $9 training has to be about one thing. There’s no room to pad it out, no module four that exists because four sounds more substantial than three. You buy it on a Tuesday and you’ve used it by Wednesday.

Compare that to the $997 course sitting in your account with two lessons watched.

The small ones also let you find out whether someone’s way of thinking suits you before you commit real money to them. I’ve spent more with Ruth and with Elizabeth since, and both times the entry point was something under $10.

That’s the same argument I make about where momentum actually comes from, and about why a steady pace still gets you there. The small finished thing beats the big unfinished one, and it sits underneath the beliefs I build everything else on.

Did I ever build my own?

No. I said at the time I was going to make a $9 offer and I never did.

What I’ve got instead sits a bit higher, and that’s been the right call for the kind of work I do. But I still think the small offer is one of the smartest things a business can put at its front door, and I’d tell you to try one before I’d tell you to build a course.

Before you go

If you’re the one with three half-built offers and no idea which one to finish, that’s a different problem from needing another $9 training.

The Quiet Business Compass is five questions, free, and it tells you which stage you’re actually at and what to do next. It takes about two minutes.

Build quietly, rebel loudly. It’s your business, your energy and your rules.
